Concern Primary Debating

Over the past number of years, Scoil Lios Teilic have participated in the Concern Primary Debates. The Concern debates are run in conjunction with Tralee Education Centre and are aimed at senior classes in primary schools. Motions are based on global issues and teams must either propose or oppose the motion.

The debates are held online via Zoom in the early rounds of the competition and then in person with teams endeavouring to progress through county to national levels. We have been fortunate enough to compete at both levels. Whether we win or lose it is always a fantastic experience, not just for the children on the team but also for the whole class who get involved in the preparation.

We have engaged in debates on relevant and challenging motions. The students learn more about each other, an awareness of their environment and about their place in the world. They also learn the skills of research, critical thinking, public speaking and refutation. These skills and experiences will benefit them through life.
